An exciting summer opportunity with the National Park Service at the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio.

Dear College Faculty or Staff Member,

Do you have ambitious students looking for opportunities to keep their history, education and communication skills fresh over summer break? If so, the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, home of our twentieth president and a unit of the National Park Service, would be a great match. JAGNHS is looking for students in education, history, political science, and communications programs to provide interpretive tours of the Garfield Home and help visitors connect with this important resource.

The James A. Garfield National Historic Site (JAGNHS) in Mentor, Ohio commemorates the life and times of President Garfield and his family, as well as commemorating the significant presidential campaign of 1880 conducted right from the front porch of the Garfield home. Today, the site consists of the home, campaign headquarters, 1893 carriage barn-turned-Visitor Center, and several outbuildings remaining from the 1880’s. Interpretive volunteers lead visitors on a journey through the twenty-nine room Victorian home, which was restored by the National Park Service in 1998. Informally, volunteers engage the public on the grounds and Visitor Center, carrying out the National Park Service’s mission to share the Garfield story and facilitate emotional and intellectual connections between the visitors and the site.

Students with strong interpersonal skills, public speaking abilities, knowledge of children, and interest in history are ideal candidates for this summer volunteer program. Unpaid internships for credit are also available. Volunteers are enrolled in the national Volunteer in Parks program, administered by the National Park Service. Benefits include comprehensive training, the ability to transfer to other parks, and a uniform shirt, not to mention the satisfaction for a summer well spent. Our scheduling is flexible to work around summer jobs and other seasonal obligations.

If you know of any students looking for summer internships or volunteer opportunities, please have them contact me directly at 440-255-8722, or allison_powell@nps.gov. Training will begin very soon in preparation for our summer season. Your assistance in matching students to parks is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Allison Powell
