DEPARTMENT OF
POLITICAL SCIENCE

Government Relations Intern - University Hospitals

Posted: 10-09-09

Dear colleagues:

Steve Brownlee asked me to forward the following information about an internship that can be a very good experience. He and I worked out a way to add some supplementary reading and writing and make it a POSC 395 course, and of course I'd be glad to do that again.

He writes that:

My former boss from University Hospitals informed me that she is looking for some good people to be Government Relations Interns and asked me if I knew anyone. Unfortunately all of my friends have since graduated, but I thought this a could be a great opportunity to forward to the department and see if any other students have an interest. As you know, I learned a great deal about advocacy, politics and health care policy through this internship, and really enjoyed the people I was working with.

While the internship is unpaid, students have the opportunity to meet government officials, attend community events and government hearings, and learn how a large health care system employs strategies both within and outside the system. Also, because the internship is unpaid, students could opt to use the experience as an independent study course for three credits like I did, pending your approval of course.

This would be a great opportunity for any political science student who is interested in health care policy, or anyone who wants to get a feel for how lobbying really works. I have attached the job description to this e-mail, and would be happy to answer any questions students may have about my experience.

Steve's e-mail is srb1221@gmail.com. Please do contact him for more information.

Best,
Joe White
