DEPARTMENT OF
POLITICAL SCIENCE

Admission Information

For graduate studies in the Department of Political Science, each applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree and submit specific credentials (see M.A. or Ph.D. description, as applicable), along with the application form and fee, no later than 90 days before the first day of classes of the semester for which admission is being requested.  Applicants will not be evaluated until they have submitted all required materials.

Foreign students are not excluded from any of the M.A. or Ph.D. admission requirements and must show further evidence of English language proficiency by submitting a total score of at least 550 on the paper version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or at least 215 on the computer version of the TOEFL.

The department is without funds to offer direct aid to students.  Information on student loans is available from the Office of University Financial Aid (216-368-4530).

Transfer of credit from another university is limited to six semester hours of graduate-level courses, approved by the department's Graduate Coordinator and the Dean of Graduate Studies; such courses must have been taken within five years of Case matriculation, passed with grades of B or better, and must be applicable to a program of study offered by the department.  No transfer of thesis or dissertation credit is allowed.

Because nearly all Political Science courses meet during the day, our graduate programs are most appropriate for full-time students.

Application materials can be downloaded from http://www.case.edu/provost/gradstudies/

M.A. Admission Requirements: In addition to the general requirements specified above, applicants to the M.A. program must submit:

- Three letters of recommendation from former instructors.  (Submission of letters from individuals other than instructors requires the approval of the Graduate Coordinator.)

- Transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate work.  The department strongly prefers that applicants have a minimum GPA of 3.2 overall and a minimum GPA of 3.4 in Political Science courses.

- Results on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), with minimum scores of 500 on Verbal, 500 on Quantitative, and 4.5 on Analytical.

Ph.D. Admission Requirements:  To be admitted to the Ph.D. program, a student must have an undergraduate degree, ideally with a focus in Political Science or in a related field (e.g. history, economics, sociology, anthropology).  Students who have majored in fields not directly related to Political Science should demonstrate in their applications that they are prepared to undertake graduate work in this discipline.  Applicants with M.A.s in Political Science from other institutions will be notified at the point of admission whether the department has certified their degrees, allowing them to be used toward Case's doctoral program requirements.  Students entering without M.A.s or with M.A.s not certified by the department are expected to complete their M.A.s in the course of their studies for the Ph.D.

Applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit:

- Three letters of recommendation from former instructors.  (Submission of letters from individuals other than instructors requires the approval of the Graduate Coordinator.)

- Transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate work.  The department strongly prefers that applicants without an M.A. in Political Science have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 overall and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.4 in Political Science courses and that applicants with an M.A. degree in Political Science have a minimum GPA of 3.4 overall in their M.A. work.

- Results on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), with minimum scores of 500 on Verbal, 500 on Quantitative and 4.5 on Analytical.

Those interested in applying to the Ph.D. program should determine, prior to applying, whether one or more members of the department faculty are active in the applicant's field of interest.  Faculty members' fields of research are described on the department web site, and individual faculty members can be contacted prior to submission of an application.  Because the department faculty is small, we cannot support Ph.D. work in a number of areas in Political Science.  For this reason, Ph.D. applications must specify the applicant's field(s) of interest, as the Graduate Studies Committee will not recommend the admission of an applicant where the department faculty cannot support the applicant's proposed course of study.

Students who are accepted into the department's M.A. program and then decide they would like to earn a Ph.D. are expected to apply to the Ph.D. program and meet these admission requirements.
