DEPARTMENT OF
POLITICAL SCIENCE

Important Information about Political Science Departmental Seminars for Spring, 2010

Dear Political Science and International Studies majors,

As part of their general education requirements, all students are required to complete a SAGES departmental seminar.  Although there is no rule that says the departmental seminar must be taken in a field in which the student is majoring, most students do so.  Students who major in International Studies usually do the departmental seminar in some related field.

Because departmental seminars should be taken before senior projects, juniors especially should be planning to complete the departmental seminar this Spring – assuming they did not do so already.  Students on Junior Year Abroad should plan to take the departmental seminar in the Fall of 2011, upon their return.

As with other SAGES seminars, each departmental seminar is limited to 17 students, should emphasize discussion, and should also emphasize writing.  A departmental seminar in particular should emphasize disciplinary writing – some aspect of written communication that is common within that particular major.  Because the SAGES capstone requires an oral presentation, oral presentations are also encouraged within departmental seminars.

Courses Being Offered

We are offering THREE departmental seminars for the Spring of 2010.  Course descriptions can be found at http://politicalscience.case.edu/coursedescrip.htm.  The three seminars are:

POSC 358, Political Strategy, with Professor Buchler.  Tues/Thurs 1:15 – 2:30.

POSC 370E, How Fragile is China?  Issues Determining Its Future, with Professor Schroeder.  MWF 3:00 – 3:50

POSC 380, The State and War in the Middle East, with Professor Moore.  Tues/Thurs 2:45-4:00.

Permit Process

Because departmental seminars are limited in size yet also a requirement, the department wants to make sure that any student who requires a departmental seminar can get into one.  That means that juniors should have first shot at registering for these three courses for the Spring.  Therefore, we have set up a temporary permit system.  For the first two weeks of registration, so from November 9 through November 22, instructors will be required to issue a permit for students to register for POSC 358, POSC 370E, or POSC 380.  So you will need to make a permit request through the SIS system.  As of November 23, we plan to remove the permit requirement, and allow anyone to register for each of those courses.

We will be quite surprised if any of the courses fill during the permit period, but we do want to be sure that students who most need a departmental seminar can get the one they want.  We apologize for any inconvenience to students who will need to wait until November 23.

Best regards,

Joe White
