The Major Program

A major in Political Science consists of 30 hours of course work in the Department, distributed in the following manner:

  1. POSC 109, "The American Political System" (3 credit hours)
  2. 6 hours of Political Science courses at the 200-level
  3. 18 hours of Political Science courses at the 300-level. Up to 9 credit hours of Washington Center credit can be counted towards this requirement.
  4. 3 hours of independent study
The independent study requirement is satisfied by successful completion of 3 hours of POSC 396, Senior Project SAGES Capstone. A further three hours of independent study through POSC 395 (See "Special Projects") can count towards the 18 hours of Political Science courses at the 300-level

Each student, upon declaring a major in Political Science, will be assigned to a faculty advisor, who will assist the student in course planning and career counseling. Frequent consultation with one's advisor is encouraged.

The Department urges students to take courses or a minor in related social sciences in order to achieve broad substantive and methodological capabilities.
