We’re glad to welcome back Kathryn C.
Lavelle, the Ellen and Dixon Long Associate Professor of
World Affairs, and Peter Moore, Associate Professor of
Political Science, from their year away from campus
doing prestigious fellowships.
Professor Lavelle spent the 2008-09 academic year in
Washington, D.C., at the Woodrow Wilson International
Center for Scholars. She worked on her second book
project, on the relationships between the U.S. Congress
and the main international financial institutions, the
IMF and the World Bank. She also had a front-row seat
for the collapse of the international financial markets
and efforts by the White House and Congress to respond.
You could view her commentary on the link below on the
department homepage.
Professor Moore spent the year in Dubai, United Arab
Emirates, as a Fulbright Scholar teaching at Zayed
University. This gave him time and proximity to research
his project on, “The War Economy of Iraq.” It also gave
him an opportunity to view other developments in the
Gulf – such as tensions with Iran, and the effects of
the financial crisis – from a different perspective.
We look forward to learning from their experiences. But
we also must announce that now Professor Lavelle has won
a Fulbright, and she will be on leave in the Spring,
making further progress on her book at the University of
Toronto. Fortunately, we will be able to cover her
courses very well (though it’s not the same), and even
add a couple of extra courses. For more information
visit our new
courses web site.
