Opportunities and Announcements
for the Week of November 12, 2018

Senior Capstone Presentations. As many of our senior POSC majors are preparing to enroll in POSC 396 Senior Capstone Project, several of our senior POSC majors are completing their capstones and will be presenting their work in progress at the Department’s Senior Capstone Presentation event next Wednesday, November 14, in the Tinkham Veale University Center. Capstone students will present their work in a conference-type format, to their peers and the assembled Political Science faculty. All POSC majors and minors are invited to attend, and those students presenting their capstone work are welcome to invite their friends and family members to join us. We will begin with presentations in the Senior Classroom and the first floor Conference Room of the Tink, and will conclude with a buffet dinner. We look forward to seeing our students there.

Registration for Spring 2019 Courses.  Registration for next semester’s courses begins this Monday, November 12, for students positioned to graduate in 2019, and continues through the month. You can find your registration schedule here. Be sure to meet with your academic advisor to discuss your plans and to review your progress toward completing the CWRU requirements for graduation. All POSC majors (and most POSC minors) have a faculty academic advisor in the Department of Political Science, and our faculty are excellent and attentive advisors. All POSC majors and minors are also welcome to meet with me, as Chair of Department, for any additional advising backup, if necessary; students can sign up for an appointment through the link on my webpage here.

The Department is offering courses this year that have not recently been available. These include two courses to be taught by Professor Matthew Hodgetts: POSC 351 Modern Political Thought and POSC 388 Policy, Politics, and the Global Environment (which satisfies a requirement for the Environmental Studies major and minor).  Professor Parris will offer POSC 367 Western European Political Systems. In addition, Professor White will teach POSC 385 Doing Government Work: Public Administration in the US, and Professor Buchler will offer POSC 349 Research Methods in Political Science (especially helpful for students undertaking capstone work). Wellman Hill Public Service Internship Grants.  For political science majors, the Wellman Hill Public Service Internship competition is under way; see http://politicalscience.case.edu/wellman-hill-grants-competition/ for eligibility standards and application requirements. The deadline for applications is February 8, 2019; applications should be submitted to Professor Karen Beckwith no later than 5:00pm on that date. Note that the Wellman Hill application process requires identification of likely internships for which the candidate intends to apply. Internship opportunities are listed on the Department’s webpage at http://politicalscience.case.edu/internship-opportunities/current-internship-opportunities/, and most Newsletters publicize recent internship news. Note that the deadlines for many internships, and for the Wellman Hill competition, are fast approaching; some of these programs, such as the Wellman Hill, require letters of recommendation from faculty members. Please feel free to speak with any of our faculty concerning your internship interests and how to apply for internships.

Internships.  As the Newsletter and the Department’s webpage indicate, internship opportunities abound for interested students. Now is the time to start preparing for an internship for summer 2019. There are a variety of sources of information about internships on the Department’s webpage menu bar at http://politicalscience.case.edu/.

Election Night Watch Party.  Many thanks to Professor Joe White, and to Jessica Jurcak, for organizing the Department’s biennial Election Night Watch Party that, as usual, was well attended, with fairly exciting results in real time (although some races remain undecided or too close to call). Photos of the watch party can be found on the Department’s Facebook page. You can also see a brief video of my interview with Kabir Bhatia at WKSU as the polls closed in Ohio on Election Day. Finally, I’ll be giving a talk, “Evaluating Election Results Through a Gender Lens,” today, Friday, November 9, in the Flora Stone Mather Living Room of the Frank N. and Jocelyn K. Linsalata Alumni Center; the full details are listed in “Events,” below.

Evaluating Election Results Through a Gender Lens
November 9, 11am-12:30pm, Linsalata Alumni Center

Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $15,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. Applications are due by January 18, 2019. 

Boren Scholarships
Scholarships for varying lengths of international study are available for students interested in national security. Applications are due February 7, 2019.

Victims of Communism
The VOC is seeking spring 2019 interns who possess a commitment to educating people about the history of communism and the dangers of collectivism. The internships are based in Washington, D.C. Click here for the available internships and how to apply.

InterReligious Task Force on Central America
Internships are available at this Cleveland-based interfaith group that promotes peace and human rights in Central America and Colombia. Apply online.
 

Volunteer Opportunities

Ohio Office of the Public Defender
The Office of the Ohio Public Defender welcomes contact from current law students, recent graduates, and other interested parties who are seeking volunteer opportunities. We accept applications for unpaid positions on a continuous rolling basis, so interested parties may apply at any time.

Volunteer for MedWish International

Summer Opportunities

FU-BEST Internship
Students interested in doing an internship in Berlin can apply for an 8-week placement on a full-time basis (35-40 hours per week). Apply online by December 1.

Center on Democracy and Organizing Summer Institute
The CDO is seeking applications from advanced Ph.D. students and early career researchers and organizers for participation in a summer training institute focused on the study of democracy and organizing. Summer 2019 applications are due December 17.

Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland
The Cleveland Fed is offering a variety of summer 2019 internships. Search intern job openings and apply online. Applications are due December 7.

Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Program
This five-week program at Duke University is designed to introduce to the world of doctoral study in political science to undergraduate students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups or those interested in broadening participation in political science and pursuing scholarship on issues affecting underrepresented groups or issues of tribal sovereignty and governance. Applications are due January 18, 2019.

Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program
The Cleveland Foundation Summer Internship Program provides talented and diverse undergraduate students and recent college graduates an opportunity to work with Cleveland-area nonprofit and public sector organizations in an 11-week paid internship. Interns also participate in and coordinate weekly seminars highlighting key organizations and programs being conducted in the local nonprofit and public sectors. Applications open Nov 12 and close Jan 21. 

Institute for Public Health Summer Research Program 
The eight-week Summer Research Program enables students from any university to develop expertise in one of two tracks: Public and Global Health Track and Aging and Neurological Diseases Track. Students may apply to one or both programs for which they qualify, but may only be accepted into one program. Applications are due February 1, 2019.

IT Lab: Summer Security Intensive
SSI is a fellowship program for rising college seniors. This paid seven-week summer fellowship program is designed for U.S. citizens and permanent residents interested in pursuing graduate degrees and careers in the information security sector. Priority applications are due February 1, 2019.

National Academy of Social Insurance
Applications for this twelve-week, paid, summer internships are now open. Students interested in U.S. social insurance and related issues are encouraged to apply for one of the Academy’snationally-competitive internship programs. This listing was forwarded by Professor White, who is a member of the NASI and can tell interested students more about the organization. Applications are due on February 1, 2019.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program
This six-week program offers students a greater understanding of careers in international affairs. Applications are due February 5, 2019.

Armed Conflict, Peace Processes and the challenges of Peacebuilding in Colombia
Applications are being accepted for this 3-week academic program which is open to undergraduate students with an interest in international relations and conflict resolution. Applicants seeking funding for the program must submit the completed scholarship application form, the accompanying academic reference, and the general program application form by December 12.
