Opportunities and Announcements
for the Week of December 10, 2018
In 2011, the Gender and Politics Standing Group of the European Consortium for Political Research met in Budapest, Hungary, for its second biennial European Conference on Politics and Gender. This conference drew several hundred politics and gender scholars from around the world, primarily but not exclusively from those at European universities. The ECPG conferences are hosted by European universities; the University of Amsterdam’s Research Centre for Gender and Sexuality will host the 2019 conference.
The 2011 ECPG conference was sponsored by the Central European University’s Center for Policy Studies and the Department of Gender Studies – a university that will no longer be located in Budapest. The Central European University is being forced out of Budapest by the Hungarian government, prohibited from accepting new students. Despite its attempts to accommodate and to comply with earlier government restrictions, the CEU will no longer be able to operate in Hungary and is moving to Vienna, Austria. CEU President Michael Ignatieff (and former Member of the Canadian Parliament and Leader of the Liberal Party), stated: “CEU has been forced out…. This is unprecedented. A US institution has been driven out of a country that is a NATO ally. A European institution has been ousted from a member state of the EU.” Despite protests and demonstrations, and pleas from leaders of other European nations, and an expression of concern by the US Embassy in Hungary (but with little opposition from the US otherwise), the Hungarian government and its Prime Minister Viktor Orban have driven a university out of the country.
The forced eviction of the CEU comes several months after the Hungarian government attacked Hungarian universities in regard to the discipline of Women’s and Gender Studies. Claims by politicians – but not by scholars – that gender research is not an academic endeavor was the rationale by which the Hungarian government has ended all funding for this research and has moved to close all gender studies programs and to end all gender studies courses. The country that only seven years ago welcomed an international cohort of the best gender and politics scholars worldwide to the ECPG Conference is closing its doors to academic freedom. It is not the only country where this is an issue.
As classes conclude for the Fall 2018 semester, it may be worth reflecting, in the current global context, how much CWRU, our excellent research university, benefits from academic freedom – the freedom to hire outstanding scholars, their freedom to follow important research questions (or even those that appear at the moment not to be terribly important) and to investigate them rigorously, our freedom as scholars and students to seek knowledge and to identify truths, and, especially but not exclusively for the social sciences, to speak truth to power.
Academic freedom protects all of us from inconvenient truths, incomplete analyses, and ideology masquerading as science or philosophy. For political science, academic freedom empowers us to study and to critique those who govern us – and in this regard, academic freedom relies heavily on democracy. Democratic freedoms underlie academic freedoms: to publish our findings, to share our insights publicly, to provide the data on which good public policy can be built, to challenge false claims by politicians on the basis of evidence.
As we come to the close of classes today, it is worth remembering, sustaining, and celebrating the democratic freedoms that provide the foundation for the academic freedoms that make universities strong, the search for truth and knowledge meaningful, and that, in their turn, reinforce democracy.
With all best wishes,
Karen
