It was great to see so many of you at the Welcome Back Gathering on Wednesday. Now that your classes are settled (with the drop/add period ending today), I hope you’ll take advantage of this month’s events. In addition to the regularly scheduled Friday lunches, they include our first Movie Night, the annual Constitution Day Forum, a discussion with Ulrike Lepont on the European view of the U.S. health policy community, and a lecture by Marthe Cohn, a Jewish woman who spied on the Nazis for the French.

As a queer, Latinx, millennial woman, Gabby Rivera strives to be a thoughtful ally for others, she confronts privilege and power, and she asks difficult questions regarding inclusivity in the U.s. of people of all colors, cultures, orientations, abilities, and genders. Rivera’s smart, funny, and engaging voice helps us to start imagining these worlds as our reality.
The Conflict over Kashmir

Since the Indian government moved to revoke special status of Indian-controlled Kashmir, Kashmir remains virtually cut off from the rest of the world. What does this decision mean for Kashmiris as well as the future of Indian democracy? Could the dispute lead to war? What is the United States role in managing and resolving this conflict?

The event features seven hours of food and dancing to polka bands. Tickets are $10 in advance available from the Polka Hall of Fame. They’re $12 at the door.
The U.S.-South Korea Alliance: Addressing North Korea and a Changing World

Former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Kathleen Stephens will discuss the dynamic alliance between the United States and South Korea as they’re confronted with new and evolving challenges.
Movie Night with Professor Joe White: The Death of Stalin
September 12, 6:30pm, Mather House 100
Come watch The Death of Stalin with Professor White, complete with a combinations of dinner, snacks, and dessert. The story isn’t exactly true, but versions of a lot of the events did occur, and while what happened between Stalin’s closest aides is not quite known, the version in the movie has lots of horribly plausible aspects.

Behind Enemy Lines – The True Story of a Jewish Spy in Nazi Germany

Marthe Cohn is a Jewish woman who was a French spy on the Nazis during World War II. Tickets are free, but required.
2019 Florence Cellar Conference on Aging: “Aging and Public Policies: Advocacy and Practice Implications”
September 27, Executive Caterers at Landerhaven
This year’s speakers include Boston University Social Welfare Policy Professor Robert B. Hudson; AARP National Volunteer President Alicia Georges; Director of the Ohio Department of Aging Ursel J. McElroy; and US Senator Sherrod Brown. The student registration fee is $75.

Political Science Department Office Assistant

Vote Everywhere Ambassador
This program empowers a national community of student leaders to strengthen democracy by leading voter registration, political engagement, and social justice initiatives on their campuses. The CWRU team is currently recruiting for one ambassador position. An Ambassador receives a $1000 stipend ($500 at the end of each semester). The position typically requires a 2-5 hour weekly commitment. Apply online for the 2019-2020 academic year by Sunday, September 8th.
