2023 Political Science Awards and more

Each year the department gives several awards. The Flora Stone Mather Prize goes to a senior, recognizing “outstanding academic performance in political science [and is] granted to the extent possible to women students.” This year’s winner is Ashley Hawkins. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and friends, the department also gives prizes for academic excellence in three subfields. This year’s Comparative Politics Prize goes to Joseph (Joey) Gonzalez and Melissa Newsham. The U.S. Politics Prize winners are Ingrid GilliesCameron Tong and Ashley Hawkins. The International Relations Prize recipient is Enya Eettickal. Congratulations to all of this year’s prize recipients.

We would also like to announce this year’s Wellman Hill Summer Internship Grant recipients. These grants are made possible by a generous gift from Elizabeth Hill (B.A., M.A. 1997) to honor her grandfather, Wellman Hill. They are intended to encourage Political Science majors to pursue and accept public service summer internships. Thanks to the hard work of the selection committee (Caroline Bass ’16, Justin Buchler, Yuri Linetsky ’97, J.D. ’00 and Andrew Lucker Ph.D. ’98), we have four recipients this year. Erick Bruckner-Iriarte will be interning with Fundación Alma Bolivia. Anne Castagnero will be interning with the Department of the Treasury. Sakthiram Kumar will be interning with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. Morgan Weber will be interning with the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri.

We are also pleased to announce that a Political Science major won a College-wide prize. Ussaid Ishaq is a 2023 recipient of the J D Magee Award, given to outstanding CWRU students who are rising seniors majoring in a social science. Well done, Ussaid. We applaud you.

To continuing students, we look forward to seeing you again in the fall. To graduating seniors, congratulations. Completing a bachelor’s degree is a major accomplishment in normal times. To have done so amidst the disruptions of a global pandemic is an extraordinary feat. We wish you all the best in everything you do.
