Opportunities and Announcements
for the Week of October 11, 2019
I welcome new subscribers who signed up at last week’s Choices Fair (and thank political science majors Marin Exler and Madeline Meyers for helping Prof. Moore represent the department). In addition to announcements and the lineup of coming events, the weekly newsletter lists internship, fellowship and volunteer opportunities. We have a number of upcoming events including Senior Capstone presentations and an informational meeting about the department’s program to support internships (the Wellman Hill program). I encourage potential majors and minors to attend.
Last week Jacqueline Greene (BA ’07, JD ’11) was the featured alumna of this year’s Careers Colloquium. She did a wonderful job of bringing us into her world of civil rights law and explaining how she went from political science major to partner at the law firm Friedman and Gilbert in twelve short years. I’d like to extend our deep gratitude for her visit.

Columbus Day Legacy – Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Columbus Day Legacy explores tensions and contradictions between Native and Italian‐American participants in the ongoing Columbus Day parade controversy in Denver, Colorado. The short documentary film will be preceded by an introduction to the ongoing call by many Native communities to change October 14 to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Making a Difference Through Education: A Broader and Bolder Approach to School Reform

Given the importance of external conditions on student achievement, a growing number of schools are recognizing that they must have the ability to influence the factors that influence the development of children outside of school. Drawing on research carried out at schools in Newark, Houston, Denver and the Eastern Cape of South Africa, Dr. Pedro Noguera will explore the types of strategies that schools have developed to form effective collaborative relationships with community-based organizations that can counter the adverse influence of poverty on student learning and child development. How the Israel Lobby Distorts the Palestinian Conflict

Dr. Walter Hixon is a Distinguished Professor History at the University of Akron. His most recent book is Israel’s Armor: The Israel Lobby and the First Generation of the Palestine Conflict. Professor Hixson will offer a historical perspective on the growth and development of the Israel lobby in the United States to help clarify many of the present controversies on Israel & Palestine.

Propel Ohio: Collegiate Leadership Summit

Cleveland Council on World Affairs Spring Internship
CCWA offers engaging internship opportunities. General description, deadlines and information on how to apply can be found here. Spring 2020 applications are due December 6, 2019.
Policy Matters Ohio Internship
PMO internships allow students an opportunity to research the economic conditions of families in Ohio, present such data, and connect with the greater community to communicate Policy Matters’ mission. Positions are offered in both the Cleveland and Columbus offices. Internships are unpaid.
Summer Opportunities
Uganda Village Project Summer Internships
The Healthy Villages Summer Internship program brings together interns from across the globe to work alongside rural communities as they are empowered to lead healthier lives. Summer 2020 applications are currently open.
Volunteer Opportunities
Cuyahoga Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition
The EITC Coalition offers free tax help to low and middle-income families in Cleveland and throughout Cuyahoga County. All volunteers will need to receive an IRS certification to help file taxes. Starting in November EITC offers free tax certification trainings. For questions, contact volunteer@refundohio.org.
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
The schedules of our upcoming Informational Sessions for Winter Semester volunteer placements will be posted in November. Please check back at that time to register for a session. Sessions fill rapidly. If you have any questions, you can contact the Volunteer Services Department at 216-844-1504.
Funding Opportunities
Projects for Peace
In general, projects should be building blocks for a sustainable peace. The overall program is intended to be worldwide in scope and impact, but specific projects may be undertaken anywhere, including in the U.S. Intent to Apply deadline is December 15, 2019. Application is due January 15, 2020.
Career Opportunities
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Fellowships
Through the CBCF’s 20-month fellowship programs, participants work with congressional members and committees, attend leadership development seminars, complete community service projects and produce policy papers. Applicants must have completed a graduate or professional degree prior to the fellowship start date. Applications are due December 6, 2019.
